If I decide to subscribe, what can I expect?
When you call for help, a GeroServices consultant will talk with you about your case.  No identifying resident information is needed. Confidentiality is built into our process.  You will then develop an action plan together. Most calls take 15 to 20 minutes. Shortly after the call you will receive full documentation of the call and sample plans for you to consider.  You will also receive background information, abstracts and helpful short articles related to your call.  Then when you are ready for more help just call again.  It is that easy.

What do I need for the video conferencing option?
You may already have most of what you need.  Your GeroServices consultant can help you set up your videoconferencing capability.  Costs are constantly changing so just call for a free quote.  The basic components include:

  • Computer
  • Monitor(s)
  • Internet Connection
  • Camera and Microphone
  • Software

You will be surprised how cost effective videoconferencing is.  In addition to GeroServices, there are a number of web-based geriatric content sources for long-term care. This is one of the best staff development investments you can make.

Our recommendation

  • Internet Connection - High speed internet connection DSL or T1 is best if available.  ISDN (128K) and standard POTS (Plain old telephone line) at 56K can be used in a pinch but the quality suffers.
  • Computer – Almost any newer computer will do.  A Pentium grade PC with a clock speed greater than 366 is suggested. The more RAM the better but plan on upgrading to at least 128 Megs of ram or more. Most standard video and sound cards will work. If you will be using two monitors be certain that your video card supports that feature.
  • Monitor - Since large monitors are expensive, we suggest using a large TV with an appropriate converter. We have used TView MicroSXGA but most newer computer video out to television adapters work well. The final choice depends upon your TV. Check the input jacks and write down your video card specs and all available jacks on the TV.  Then any clerk at the computer store or online supplier can help you select a good adapter.
  • Camera – you can actually buy a web cam for about 30 bucks.  However if you want good quality, plan on investing some money here.  We think the Polycom viewstation option is a good middle of the road choice that offers good quality at a fair price.
  • Software – Most cameras come with the basic software you will need.
